STEVENS POINT, WIS. (November 19, 2013) – St. Benedict’s Winter Ale is blessed with a new 12-ounce can package sure to please fans of the Stevens Point Brewery’s popular winter seasonal brew.

The dark and hearty winter brew, which also benefits from a new flavor profile, is now available in convenient 12-pack cans wherever Point’s handcrafted beers are sold. Brewed with dark-roasted malts and noble hops for a rich, malty flavor, St. Benedict’s Winter Ale is available at retail from November 1 (All Saints Day) through January.

“We already offer our spring, summer and fall seasonal craft beers – Point Three Kings Ale, Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat and Point Oktoberfest – in 12-packs of 12-ounce cans, so it makes sense to include our winter seasonal in our can package mix,” said Joe Martino, Stevens Point Brewery Operating Partner. “Our loyal fans asked for it, and we delivered.”

The new 12-pack can package is produced on the state-of-the-art can packer line installed earlier this year as part of the brewery’s latest expansion. “The new packaging line greatly increases our

capabilities, so introducing this new can package for St. Benedict’s Winter Ale, which continues to grow in popularity, was an easy decision for us to make,” Martino said.

“The explosive growth of craft beer in cans in just the past year is simply amazing,” he added. “Craft beer lovers have accepted aluminum can packages with open arms, and St. Benedict’s Winter Ale is now in on the action.”

According to Craftcans.com, a website dedicated exclusively to craft beer in cans, as of November 365 U.S. craft brewers package nearly 1,300 beers in cans, which are recyclable, unbreakable and lightweight, and often are welcomed where glass bottles are prohibited, like beaches, parks and campgrounds.

Brewing St. Benedict’s Winter Ale

In addition to its new can package, St. Benedict’s Winter Ale now features a more robust, full-bodied flavor reminiscent of dark, German-style bock beers, according to Point Brewmaster Gabe Hopkins.

Hopkins uses highly kilned dark malt, two-row dark chocolate malt, two-row pale malt and special beer yeast to brew St. Benedict’s Winter Ale, a deep reddish-brown beer inspired by the legend of St. Benedict, the Italian monk who founded the Benedictine Order in the Middle Ages.

“Brewing is both art and science, and we experiment with our brewing processes and recipes trying to find just the right balance between the two,” he explained. “This year we enhanced the ingredients and process for St. Benedict’s Winter Ale. The result is a richer, warmer brew with a hearty, chocolate-like character perfect for crisp, cold winter evenings. Fans of full-bodied winter beers will be delighted.”
